I've always wondered, why the Fedex Caravans / ATRs are not operated directly by Fedex, but rather a feeder company?

I think I remember a rumour about something in the Fedex mainline pilot's contract which prevents them from operating the feeder aircraft themselves. (ie: pilots flying feeder aircraft are not employed by Fedex)

Any ideas?

There are many feeders. They carry the responsibility for their area and to get the job done. Pilots get used to a region and being supported by an operator who is establised in that area. (one idea)

Sucks for us but it's a very smart move on FedEx's part. Feeders are divided among a half dozen regional companies so trouble with one doesn't shut down their entire system. They have less union worries because we aren't FedEx employees and don't belong to their pilot's union. They can keep their pilot's happier by giving them a sense that they are holding us down as they can't hire feeder guys unless they quit first & then apply, they can maintain a great deal of control of how each company operates without actually owning/running the companies as they control the purse strings and own the aircraft. It's really a brilliant set-up on their part.
